About the Registered Tax Return Preparer Exam
The Registered Tax Return Preparer Exam will be 120 questions in length with questions coming from 7 domains:
- Domain 1: Preliminary Work and Collection of Taxpayer Data 15%
- Domain 2: Treatment of Income and Assets 22%
- Domain 3: Deductions and Credits 22%
- Domain 4: Other Taxes 11% Included in the domain are: Alternative Minimum Tax, Early distributions from retirement plans, Self-employment tax, Unreported Social Security and Medicare tax, Repayment
- Domain 5: Completion of the Filing Process 10%
- Domain 6: Practices and Procedures 5%
- Domain 7: Ethics 15% Circular 230 Subparts A, B, and C (excluding D, E) (weight: 15%)
Questions will be mostly four-answer multiple-choice, but True/False questions will also be used in the test.
The time allotment to complete the exam is currently estimated by the IRS to be two to three hours in length. Testing is scheduled to begin in October.
With an estimate of 350,000 to 500,000 Tax Professionals planning to take the RTRP Exam, we are STRONGLY recommending candidates schedule their exam as soon as possible while test availability is wide open. Those candidates who wait until 2013 to schedule their test may find it difficult to find a test date and time that accommodates their schedule.
Those candidates who have their PTIN can schedule their exam at Prometric once testing begins. The Exam Fee is predicted to be between $100 and $125. We will provide a link to the RTRP Exam Registration page once it becomes available.
